Day Facts |

    • Day Facts for 17-02-2017 -  CLIMATE, FILMS, LAW, SOCIETY, SPORTS
        • 1. With the warming of global climate, extreme weather events like extreme heat, intense rainfall and drought have become more frequent and severe (though some sections in scientific and political community may disagree).
          2. The storm blizzard of 1993, also called the “Superstorm’93”, that occurred on March 13 and 14, 1993, was described by National Weather Service of the US as one of the worst storms of the twentieth century.
          3. The East Africa drought and famine in Somalia, Kenya and Ethiopia was the worst weather disaster of 2011. It was for the first time in 90 years when the UN officially declared famine in two regions of Somalia.
          4. In 2016, the annual global temperature reached a record high for the third year in a row, a remarkable occurrence rarely seen in past 150 years. There was a streak of record warmth in 1939, 1940, and 1941. Those years, which ranked as third warmest, second warmest, and warmest, respectively, in 1941, now rank as 64th, 50th, and 38th warmest today.
          5. In 1924, floods in Upper Ganga and Yamuna caused serious damage to UP and Punjab affecting 13,080 Km area. 1100 persons and one lakh cattle were drowned and over 2,42,000 houses were washed away.  In July 1943, 50 inches of rain in a single day was recorded on the hills of Mewar. Unprecedented floods in Ajmer and Merwara destroyed 50 villages and 5000 lives were lost. The October 1968 floods of Teesta-Brahmaputra  took toll of 2700 human lives and over 59,000 cattle in Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling.
          6. Severe floods in Godavari and Tungabhadra in August 2000 rendered over 98,000 people homeless. Heavy rains associated landslides in Mumbai in July 2000 and in Hyderabad in August 2000 are examples of urban development and its vulnerability to floods.
          7. The Earth’s temperature has been rising at an average rate of 0.13°F each decade since the start of the record in 1880 and more than twice that rate (0.31°F) in the past half century, due to long term warming.
          8. Natural climate cycles, the biggest player being the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO), cause global temperatures to temporarily rise (El Niño) or fall (La Niña). Generally, the stronger the El Niño or La Niña, the greater the impact will be on the average global temperature. Over time, they balance each other out.
          9. In 2016, Alaska (US) experienced widespread warmth, shattering average temperature records. Alaska’s largest city, Anchorage, had average temperature was 4.5 degrees Fahrenheit above normal.
          10. The Great Barrier Reef (Australia) had a bad year in 2016, as prolonged high temperatures devastated portions of the reef. The ongoing ocean warming may keep some reefs from ever recovering their previous level of health, diversity, and productivity.
