- 1. World politics – Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull arrived on a four-day state visit to India, during which he will hold talks with his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi on ways to boost ties in key areas including defence, security, energy and trade. However, the much-anticipated economic pact between India and Australia will not be inked during his visit. India is likely to raise the issue of security of Indians in Australia. Worth nothing : Australia and China are huge trade partners (commodities).
2. World politics – The US stepped up pressure on Russia to rein in the Syrian regime of President Bashar al-Assad. It has warned that any more chemical attacks would severely damage relationship between the two countries, and suggested there could be no peace while Assad remains in power. This is a huge change from Trump’s earlier position. It is also a strong message to China!
3. Indian economy – Senior Congress leader and former FM P. Chidambaram called for the Centre to push the deadline to implement the new Goods and Service Tax (GST) regime to October 1. He said that the July 1 deadline was not practical and undesirable and that rushing to roll out GST could be detrimental. It would work against India’s small and medium enterprises as they were not as familiar with filing their details online. Want to learn more on the GST?

Indian politics - Two days after the income tax dept. raided Tamil Nadu health minister Vijayabaskar and seized evidence of bribing voters, the ECI cancelled the by-election to the R K Nagar constituency of Chennai (scheduled for April 12). The documents unearthed showed that close to Rs.90 crore was to distributed to voters in R K Nagar constituency by the AIADMK Amma party which fielded T T V Dhinakaran. Ordinary citizens of India can imagine the extent of corruption prevalent in our political system!
5. Elections – Opposition parties decided to unitedly take up with the Election Commission the issue of alleged EVM tampering in elections held in various states recently. They are demanding that VVPAT (paper trail of voting) be introduced in all future elections. The Congress has also been pushing for use of ballot papers instead of EVMs in upcoming elections in view of the alleged tampering. This issue is snowballing and shows little signs of abating.
6. Defence and military – As a US strike group led by an aircraft carrier proceeded towards the Korean peninsula, the US President Donald Trump asked for options for eliminating the North Korean nuclear threat. The move is sure to raise tension in the region and comes immediately after US cruise missile strike on Syria that was widely interpreted as putting Pyongyang on warning over its refusal to abandon its nuclear ambitions. Trump’s public position on world politics has shown a significant change.
7. World politics – A Russian programmer was arrested in Barcelona, Spain reportedly over suspicion of his involvement in a number of hacking attacks linked to Moscow’s alleged interference in the United States presidential elections last year. Russia’s role in the presidential election has been speculated since the run up to the elections. Trump’s Presidency has been hobbled due to that.
8. Companies, products, services – E-commerce company Snapdeal has been having a very rough year. It removed around 600 people in February, and its future is being speculated over. There have been reports of Flipkart acquiring Snapdeal in a deal pushed through by SoftBank (of Masayoshi Son). Snapdeal founders Kunal Bahl and Rohit Bansal had taken a 100 percent salary cut, and have now promised salary raises to employees. Indian internet retail markets have proven different from what was earlier assumed.
9. Companies, products, services – Diehard Nokia fans, time to cheer! Nokia is not only poised to make a comeback in the smartphones market with its 3310, Nokia 3 and 5, but the Finnish company is also planning to bring the 5G network in India. Nokia has signed memorandum of understandings (MoUs) with Indian telecom giants Airtel and BSNL to expand their collaborative technology partnership to work on 5G technology standard and management of connected devices.
10. Corruption – The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) adopted the politically contentious report on the 2010 Commonwealth Games. The 357-page report contains critical references to the Manmohan Singh PMO and also faults it for bad supervision of the scam-hit Games. The committee, under the leadership of BJP MP M. M. Joshi, was examining irregularities pointed out by the CAG report. The report also noted the cabinet secretariat's failure to ensure accountability.
