    •  Highlights for 13-04-2017
        • 1. World politics – Though the US-Russia relations remain strained, Russia and the US agreed to continue fighting international terrorism and also discussions on conflict settlement in Syria. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that the prospects of future joint work between the two countries were very bright.
          2. Regional politics – With international pressure seemingly mounting over the death sentence to Indian national Kulbhushan Jadhav, Pakistan has started showing signs of softening its stance on the issue. Earlier, Pak defence minister Khwaja Mohammad Asif said that Pakistan will not implement the death sentence to Jadhav immediately and that he could appeal at three different levels. Now, Pakistan’s High Commissioner to India, Abdul Basit has said that Jadhav has full right to seek mercy.
          3. Persons and personalities – Commodities trading expert and hedge fund manager Jim Rogers said that he was stunned that the GoI succeeded in getting the GST through! Rogers, who sold his holdings in Indian companies in 2015, admitted that he was seriously considering returning to the Indian market. He called the GST a historic move. Rogers will get another shock when the GST is implemented!
          4. World politics – Even after sending its naval force to the Korean peninsula, and military option being open, the US administration is focusing its North Korea strategy on further tougher economic sanctions, including oil embargo, banning its airlines, intercepting its cargo ships and even punishing Chinese banks doing business with North Korea. This remains the world’s biggest geopolitical flashpoint as on date.
          5. Indian economy – Bye Bye Five Year Plans! The 5-Year plan era of Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru will officially end with the NITI Aayog’s governing council approving the government’s new policy document – the three-year action plan (2017-2020). The government had announced that it would end the five-year plans after the 12th plan ended on March 31, 2017 and substitute it with three-year action plan and 15-year vision document. This is the beginning of a new era!
          6. Indian politics – Amidst the ongoing EVM tampering controversy, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has thrown a challenge to political parties, scientists and experts to prove that the EVMs could be tampered with. The exercise is aimed at reassuring people that EVMs were secured and could not be manipulated. Machines are kept at the ECI, and you are free to go and prove they can be tampered with. That’s transparency at its best!
          7. Defence and military – The British defence secretary Michael Fallon, who is on a visit to India said that the UK wants to further strengthen its cooperation with India in the fight against terrorism and extremism and offering cutting-edge military technology for co-production of weapon systems to become world leaders in arms exports.
          8. World politics – US President Donald Trump, who has been calling NATO as obsolete so far, dramatically changed his stance on NATO saying that he no longer considered it obsolete. His comments came during a joint press conference with NATO Secretary General Jens Stolenberg. Trump again called on NATO members to meet their financial obligations and pay what they owe. Trump’s understanding of world affairs has undergone a major reversal in just 3 months!
          9. Energy and power – The levelised solar power tariff came down to an all-time low of Rs. 3.15 per unit in an auction of a 250 MW project at Kadapa in Andhra Pradesh. Earlier in February, lower capital expenditure and cheaper credit had brought down tariff to Rs. 2.97 per unit in an auction conducted for the 750 MW capacity in Rewa Solar Park in Madhya Pradesh, which later worked out to Rs. 3.30 per unit.
          10. Persons and personalities – Dainik Bhaskar group chairman Shri Ramesh Chandra Agrawal passed away on Wednesday at the age of 72. He suffered a heart attack at the Ahmedabad airport and could not be saved. Mr. Agrawal was the force behind making the group India’s leading publication house. PM Modi, Chief ministers of Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and other leaders condoled his demise.
