    •  Highlights for 05-05-2017
        • 1. Government schemes – The “Swachh Bharat Mission” was launched by the Prime Minister on October 2, 2014. Under the mission, the Ministry of Urban Development conducts annual survey of cities to rank them on various parameters of cleanliness. In the 2017 Survey, Indore (MP) has been ranked as the cleanest city in the country. Indore was placed at 149th position just two years back! PM Modi has pledged to make India totally clean by 2019, Gandhiji’s 150th birth anniversary.
          2. Defence and military – In the wake of continuous terror attacks and Pakistan’s cease-fire violations in Jammu and Kashmir, security forces carried out massive door-to-door clean-up operations in South Kashmir to clear the area of suspected terrorists and other anti-social elements taking shelter in the area. The forces recovered huge quantity of arms and ammunition and explosives from homes of local residents. This is the biggest such search operation after the 1990s. Do check our comprehensive page on Indian defence forces here.
          3. World politics – US President Donald Trump managed a much-needed victory in the US Congress as the House narrowly pushed through the Bill repealing the landmark health reforms –  Obamacare – of his predecessor. Surprisingly, 20 Republicans joined the opposition in the voting. The Bill was however, passed by a margin of 217-213 in the Republican-controlled House. Trump seems to be quickly learning the art of political management now! Read all about Donald Trump here and here.
          4. Science and technology – The 28-hour countdown began for the launch of ISRO’s South Asia Satellite – India’s gift to its neighbours – which will lift off today from Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh. India's space diplomacy is seen as a move to counter to China's growing influence in the area. Pakistan is not participating in the project. Read all about ISRO here.
          5. Society and culture – Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi told the United Nations Human Rights Council meeting in Geneva that safeguarding the rights of minorities is an essential core of the polity in India. India rebutted attempts by Pakistan to point fingers at New Delhi for attacks on minorities. Mr. Rohatgi stressed India was a secular state with no state religion with a Constitution that enshrines provisions for the protection of the minorities. Read about human rights issues here.
          6. Indian economy – President Pranab Mukherjee has given his nod to the ordinance dealing with banking sector’s non-performing loans and the amendment to the Banking Regulation Act. The new framework for non-performing assets (NPAs) will allow state-owned banks to conduct open auctions of NPAs, wherein cash-rich public sector companies will be encouraged to buy such assets in their sector. It contains a set of fresh guidelines for public auction of assets by public sector banks (PSBs) for the steel and power sectors, which account for a majority of stressed assets.  Read all about NPAs here.
          7. Companies, products, services – Baba Ramdev’s Patanjali , which sells everything from shampoos to biscuits, noodles nd dairy products, doubled its turnover in one year and reported revenues of Rs. 10,561 crore for the year ended March 31, 2017. Ramdev said that thus far, FMCG has meant MNCs in India, and the company has broken that monopoly.
          8. World politics – US President Donald Trump will travel to Saudi Arabia and Israel this month, kicking off his first foreign trip, where he will work to reinvigorate traditional alliances in the region before attending a NATO meeting in Brussels on May 25 and the Group of 7 (G-7) summit in Sicily on May 26.
          9. Environment and ecology – Renowned English theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking thinks that humanity must leave Earth in the next century, and colonise another planet to ensure their survival, considering the dangers that lie ahead of us. Hawking said that the effects of climate change, overdue asteroid strikes, epidemics and population growth has put the Earth in a precarious position. Read more on environment ecology and climate change here
          10. Indian economy – The new National Steel Policy focuses on developing new, value added steel products. According to the policy, India needs to make special efforts to domestically make steel for high-end applications, electrical steel (CRGO), special steel and alloys for power equipments, aerospace, defence and nuclear applications. Presently, most of these advanced steel grades are imported. The idea is to encourage domestic steel companies to achieve global quality standards in these steel varieties.
          11. Regional politics – The Pakistan High Commissioner in India, Basit Ali was summoned by Foreign Secretaty S. Jaishankar over the killing of two Indian soldiers and mutilation of their bodies by the Border Action Team (BAT) that crossed the LoC in the Krishna Ghati sector of Poonch in J & K and directly blamed Pakistan for this barbaric act. Basit was told that blood samples of the Indian soldiers that have been collected and the trail of blood at Roza Nala clearly showed that the killers returned across the Line of Control. It remains to be seen if Pakistan will at all consider such “proofs” as valid because they already know everything.
          12. Indian economy – The NPA problem is perhaps finally getting resolved. The RBI is being given the needed power by the government through an ordinance, to effectively deal with the mounting NPAs (non-performing assets) in banking system. The ordinance will amend Section 35A of the Banking Regulation Act. The proposal was approved by the Union Cabinet. If this works, it will be a big development.
          13. Constitution and law – The government continues to defend its move to link Aadhar with PAN, and also admitted in the Supreme Court that Aadhar card holders’ data was indeed leaked by various other government departments and state agencies and not by the Unique Identification Authority of India UIAI). “Not all body parts are the sole property of respective citizens” is how the government put it
          14. Constitution and law – During the hearing of a petition filed against linking the Aadhar card with PAN and making it mandatory for filing tax returns, the Supreme Court questioned whether a tax payer can file his tax returns the way he liked and not through the mechanism set up by the government. Can a person say he will not follow the tax regime and pay his tax in a manner he likes? It seems that over the past years, most Indians have indeed decided not to pay any taxes at all
          15. Indian economy – In view of a major demand of armed forces personnel, the government notified the pending implementation of the Seventh Central Pay Commission (CPC). It has decided to continue with an earlier system of disbursing disability pension and not to go ahead with a new regime recommended by the seventh pay commission.
          16. Science and technology – The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) recently unveiled a n environment-friendly solar hybrid electric car, designed and developed through in-house resources. The demonstration of the environment-friendly vehicle included a successful uphill drive. ISRO is now researching on cutting down the cost of the car. The next decade will see a major consumer push for renewable driven equipments and automobiles worldwide.
          17. World politics – British Prime Minister Theresa May came down heavily on the European Union bureaucrats in Brussels, accusing them of trying to ruin Brexit talks. PM May said that the European Union’s negotiating stance has hardened and threats had been issued against Britain by European politicians and officials. Britain is discovering the perils of ejecting from the massive system now.
          18. Indian economy – The government approved initiating the process of disinvestment of hotels and properties of India Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC) at three locations – Bhopal, Guwahati and Bharatpur. Business is not the business of the government, was the guiding dictum.
          19. Indian economy – US-based think-tank Global Financial Integrity (GFI), in its latest report titled ‘Illicit Financial Flows to and from Developing Countries: 2005-2014’ said that an estimated US $770 billion in black money entered India during 2005-2014. The report added that nearly $165 billion in illicit money existed in the country during the same period, and during 2014 alone, around $101 billion black money entered the country. Ordinary citizens can take solace from the fact that big things are happening
          20. Indian politics – The opposition parties are trying to field a common opposition candidate for President in the upcoming presidential elections. Congress President Sonia Gandhi met National Conference working president Omar Abdullah, and is likely to meet BSP supremo Mayawati, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Bannerjee and DMK leader M K Stalin in the next few days. Names of NCP chief Sharad Pawar, and JD (U) leader Sharad Yadav are making rounds as possible candidates. Democracy is an interesting experiment indeed!
