- 1. During the Cold War era (1950-1991), India adopted a non-aligned policy (NAM movement).
2. A shift in India’s foreign policy first started during the late 1990s from the NDA-1 regime.
3. It became more pronounced during the NDA-2 regime (2014 onwards), where a clear tilt towards the US is seen.
4. Contrary to expectations that PM Modi was a novice in foreign affairs, he has shown pragmatism in foreign policy when he first invited heads of all neighbouring countries to his swearing-in ceremony (May 2014).
5. Modi’s second year (2015) started with a ground-breaking visit to Bangladesh, a swing through Central Asia, a long overdue visit to Afghanistan, and a renewed focus on the Middle East or West Asia.
6. India’s priorities and strategic objectives include prioritizing an integrated neighbourhood - “Neighbourhood First”.
7. Ensuring a stable and multipolar balance of power in the Indo-Pacific – “Act East”.
