        • 1. Society and culture – Shocking revelations (through camera footage) expose Bengaluru’s dark side as women got molested in large numbers on new year’s eve. Police were ineffectual at that time, but claim they are “silently” working to catch the culprits.
          2. Indian politics – TMC MP Sudip Bandopadhyaya is arrested by the CBI in connection with Rose Valley scam allegedly worth Rs.17,000 crores, or more. Mamata Bannerjee alleges vendetta politics by the BJP at centre. BJP refuses.
          3. Constitution and law – Justice J.S.Khehar is sworn in as the 44th Chief Justice of India on 04-01-2017. He is the first CJI, SC from the Sikh community.
          4. Indian economy – The Cabinet Committee on Parliamentary Affairs (CCPA) has proposed a shorter 10 day session for Budget 2017. Breaking with colonial convention, it will be presented on 01 Feb, rather than last day.
          5. Regional politics – The US has refused to confirm its mediation in the dispute on Indus Water Treaty between India and Pakistan, and has suggested bilateral resolution of disputes.
          6. World economy – Donald Trump has appointed Robert Lighthizer as the US Trade Representative (USTR) or “Trade Envoy”. He is a known China-critic.
          7. Indian economy – The NASSCOM has met the GST Council to express its concerns over the multiple complex issues that could cripple the software sector – complex place of supply, input credit and valuation requirements, multiple registrations – will be unviable.
          8. Demonetisation – The BHIM App launched by PM Modi crosses 50 lac downloads. But users report it is not exactly free (Rs.1.5 for sms gets deducted) and not user-friendly as it hangs frequently.
          9. Indian politics – Arvind Kejriwal and Aam Aadmi Party have found a novel way to “expose” the corruption of PM Modi through their “Tijori Tod, Banda Phod” (open locker, spill secrets) exercise in election rallies. They allege demonetization is a huge scam.
          10. United Nations – The new Secretary General Antonio Guterres says that multilateralism and teamwork is the only way to achieve the multiple goals of the hallowed international body.

        • 1. समाज एवं संस्कृति - अत्यंत षर्मनाक खुलासे (कैमरा फुटेज के माध्यम से) बेंगलुरु के उस काले पक्ष को उजागर करते हैं जिसमें नव-वर्ष की संध्या पर बड़ी संख्या में महिलाओं से छेड़छाड़ की घटनाएँ हुईं। उस समय पुलिस भी अप्रभावी साबित हुई परंतु उसका दावा है कि वह अपराधियों को पकड़ने के लिए "खामोशी" से काम कर रही है
          2. भारतीय राजनीति - तृणमूल कांग्रेस के संसद सदस्य सुदीप बंदोपाध्याय को 17,000 करोड़ रुपये या उससे भी अधिक मूल्य के कथित रोज वैली घोटाले के आरोप में केंद्रीय अन्वेषण ब्यूरो द्वारा गिरफ्तार किया गया। ममता बैनर्जी ने केंद्र की भाजपा पर प्रतिशोध की राजनीति का आरोप लगाया है। भाजपा ने आरोपों का खंडन किया है
          3. संविधान एवं कानून - 4 जनवरी 2017 को न्यायमूर्ति जे. एस. खेहर को भारत के 44 वें प्रधान न्यायाधीश के रूप में शपथ दिलाई गई। वे सिख समुदाय से सर्वोच्च न्यायालय के प्रधान न्यायाधीश बनने वाले प्रथम व्यक्ति हैं
          4. भारतीय अर्थव्यवस्था - संसदीय मामलों की मंत्रिमंडलीय समिति ने वर्ष 2017 के बजट अधिवेशन के 10 दिन कम करने का प्रस्ताव दिया है। उपनिवेशवादी परंपरा को तोड़ते हुए बजट का प्रस्तुतीकरण फरवरी के अंतिम दिन के बजाय 1 फरवरी 2017 को किया जाएगा
          5. क्षेत्रीय राजनीति - अमेरिका ने भारत और पाकिस्तान के बीच के सिंधु जल समझौते पर मध्यस्थता से इंकार किया है, साथ ही उसने दोनों देशों के बीच के विवादों के द्विपक्षीय निराकरण का भी सुझाव दिया है
          6. विश्व अर्थव्यवस्था - डॉनल्ड ट्रम्प ने रॉबर्ट लाइथिजेर को अमेरिका का व्यापार प्रतिनिधि या "व्यापार राजदूत" नियुक्त किया है। वह एक चीन-आलोचक के रूप में जाने जाते हैं
          7. भारतीय अर्थव्यवस्था - नैसकॉम ने ऐसे बहुविध जटिल मुद्दों के संबंध में जीएसटी परिषद से मुलाकात की है जो सॉफ्टवेयर क्षेत्र को पंगु बना सकते हैं - जटिल आपूर्ति स्थान, निविष्टि श्रेय एवं मूल्यांकन आवश्यकताएँ, बहुविध पंजीकरण - अव्यवहार्य होंगे
          8. विमुद्रीकरण - प्रधानमंत्री मोदी द्वारा शुरू किये गए भीम एप्प ने 50 लाख डाउनलोड पार किये। परन्तु उपयोगकर्ता बताते हैं कि यह पूर्णतः निःशुल्क नहीं है (एसएमएस के लिए 1.5 रूपया काट लिया जाता है), साथ ही यह उपयोगकर्ता अनुकूल भी नहीं है क्योंकि यह अक्सर हैंग हो जाता है
          9. भारतीय राजनीति - अरविंद केजरीवाल और आम आदमी पार्टी ने अपनी चुनावी रैलियों में उनके "तिजोरी तोड़, भांडा फोड़" प्रयोग के माध्यम से प्रधानमंत्री मोदी के भ्रष्टाचार को "उजागर" करने का एक अभिनव तरीका निकाला है। उनका आरोप है कि विमुद्रीकरण एक बड़ा घोटाला है

        • 1. Indian foreign policy has been substantially redefined by Modi government post 2014. Unfortunately, China has repeatedly supported Pakistan openly, breaking with its own tradition of not interfering between India – Pakistan disputes.
          2. Senior Indian diplomats have begun to say now that “Pakistan is a subset of our China relations”, indicating the deep nexus that is anti-India and active.
          3. “The Power of 55” – India hosted the biggest ever India-Africa Forum Summit (IAFS) at New Delhi from Oct26-29, 2015 which included all 54 African nations, and of course, India.
          4. Pravasi Bharatiya - There are 3.12 crore overseas Indians settled globally, of which 1.34 crore are Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) and 1.78 crore are Non Resident Indians (NRIs).
          5. Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas – The first of the 13 PBDs so far was held in January 2003 in New Delhi. The fourteenth PBD will be held from 7-9 Jan, 2017 at Bengaluru.
          6. Mahatama Gandhi – The thirteenth PBD at Gandhinagar, Gujarat in Jan 2015 coincided with the hundredth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi’s return from South Africa.
          7. Indus Water Treaty – The GoI finds legal untenability in the World Bank launching two processes for appointment of a Neutral Expert - requested by India - and establishment of a Court of Arbitration - requested by Pakistan- to adjudicate on Kishenganga and Ralte projects.
          8. Yoga wins laurels – The Inter-Governmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage has inscribed Yoga in UNESCO's Representative List as the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
          9. India – Bangladesh relations – Both have worked to strengthen bilateral cooperation on issues including settlement of land boundary issues, security, infrastructure development, trade and investments, connectivity and people to people exchange.
          10. Indian Ocean Region – PM Modi’s visits to Seychelles, Mauritius and Sri Lanka in March 2015, and the creation of a separate Division in MEA in January 2016 for the Indian Ocean Region, and the structured Trilateral Maritime Security Dialogue (between India, Sri Lanka and Maldives) to address geo-strategic security indicate India takes the IOR very seriously.

          4. प्रवासी भारतीय - वैश्विक स्तर पर बसे हुए भारतीयों की संख्या 3.12 करोड़ है जिनमें से 1.34 करोड़ लोग भारतीय मूल के हैं जबकि 1.78 करोड़ लोग अनिवासी भारतीय व्यक्ति हैं
          5. प्रवासी भारतीय दिवस - अब तक हुए 13 प्रवासी भारतीय दिवसों में से पहला प्रवासी भारतीय दिवस जनवरी 2003 में नई दिल्ली में आयोजित किया गया था। 14 वां प्रवासी भारतीय दिवस 7 से 9 जनवरी 2017 के दौरान बेंगलुरु में आयोजित किया जाएगा
          6. महात्मा गाँधी - जनवरी 2015 में गुजरात के गांधीनगर में आयोजित किया गया 13 वां प्रवासी भारतीय दिवस महात्मा गाँधी के दक्षिण अफ्रीका से भारत वापस आने की 150 वीं जयंती के आयोजन के समय ही आयोजित हुआ था
          7. सिंधु जल समझौता - भारत सरकार को विश्व बैंक में किशनगंगा और राल्ते परियोजनाओं पर एक तटस्थ विशेषज्ञ नियुक्त करने के भारत के अनुरोध और एक मध्यस्थता न्यायाधिकरण स्थापित करने के पाकिस्तान के अनुरोध के लिए न्यायिक समर्थन प्राप्त नहीं हो पाया है
          8. योग ने ख्याति अर्जित की - अमूर्त सांस्कृतिक विरासत के संरक्षण के लिए गठित अंतर-शासन समिति ने योग को यूनेस्को की प्रतिनिधि सूची में मानवता के लिए अमूर्त सांस्कृतिक विरासत के रूप में अंतर्लिखित किया है
          9. भारत-बांग्लादेश संबंध - दोनों देशों ने भूमि सीमा मुद्दों, सुरक्षा, अधोसनाचना विकास, व्यापार एवं निवेश, संयोजकता और नागरिकों से नागरिकों के विनिमय सहित सभी मुद्दों पर द्विपक्षीय संबंध सुदृढ़ करने की दिशा में काम किया है
          10. हिंद महासागर क्षेत्र - प्रधानमंत्री की मार्च 2015 की सेशेल्स, मॉरिशस, और श्रीलंका की यात्रा और जनवरी 2016 में हिंद महासागर क्षेत्र में लिए विदेश मंत्रालय में एक स्वतंत्र प्रभाग खोलना, और भू-सामरिक सुरक्षा को संबोधित करने के लिए संरचित त्रिपक्षीय समुद्री संवाद (भारत, सृलाकना और मालदीव्स के बीच) यह संकेत प्रदान करता है कि भारत हिंद महासागर क्षेत्र को काफी गंभीरता से ले रहा है
