        • 1. Indian economy – The Economic Affairs Secretary Shaktikanta Das pulled up Amazon for denigrating Indian icons. He said Amazon will do so at its own peril. This comes soon after MEA Sushma Swaraj castigated Amazon. Liberals have criticized this criticism, saying this is over-reaction. Mr Das clarified they remain committed to globalization.
          2. Defence and military – Responding to ceasefire violations, the Army Chief has warned Pakistan that our desire for peace is not our weakness. He also warned Jawans for breach of discipline through social media video posts.
          3. Indian politics – Ending months of suspense, cricketer-poet-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu who left the BJP, has finally joined the Congress (I). He will contest from Amritsar East seat in coming Assembly elections.
          4. Society and culture – What may not raise angry protests in the West, can be alarming in the East. Slippers (flip-flop) with images of Mahatma Gandhi were being sold on Amazon. Critics say it seems Amazon is not serious about one of the largest emerging markets in the world, hence takes it too lightly in sheer hubris.
          5. World politics – The CIA Director John Brennan has reminded Donald Trump to carefully weigh each word he says (referring to the comparison of Intelligence Community with Nazi Germany), and also be cautious with Russia. Trump is in the crosshairs after an alleged dossier with scandalous proofs hit Washington.
          6. World politics – China’s President Xi Jinping will address the World Economic Forum (WEF) at Davos, just as Donald Trump has vowed to challenge every long-held principle including the One-China policy. Sparks expected ahead.
          7. Indian economy – The International Labour Organisation (ILO) predicts that the number of jobless will increase from 1.77 crore in 2016 to 1.8 crore by 2018 but unemployment rate may decrease from 3.5 %  to 3.4 % in 2017. Generating fresh jobs is a huge challenge for the NDA govt. which is pushing the Skill India programme.
          8. Corporate – The government wants Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) to pay a penalty of $ 1.55 billion on alleged charges of production of gas from a Krishna Godavari basin reservoir it shared with the PSU ONGC. While the arbitration is on, the Oil Ministry has asked for legal views on whether it should proceed to recover the penalty.
          9. Games and sports – The Kohli-era started with a bang, as India pulled off a miraculous win in the first ODI against England, with both Virat Kohli and Kedar Jadhav hitting centuries and bringing victory home, against a shattered England which scored a big 350/7.
          10. Science and technology – Elon Musk’s Space X has successfully conducted a space flight from California, putting 10 satellites for Iridium Communications into orbit, after a disastrous explosion in Florida, in September 2016.

        • 1. भारतीय अर्थव्यवस्था - आर्थिक मामलों के सचिव शक्तिकांत दास ने भारतीय प्रतीकों को कलंकित करने के लिए अमेजन की खिंचाई की है। उन्होंने कहा कि अमेजन ऐसा स्वयं अपनी जोखिम पर करेगा। उनका यह बयान विदेशमंत्री सुषमा स्वराज द्वारा की गई अमेजन की आलोचना के ठीक बाद में आया है। उदारवादियों ने इस आलोचना की यह कहते हुए आलोचना की है कि यह अतिवादी प्रतिक्रिया है। श्री दास ने स्पष्ट किया है कि वे वैश्वीकरण के प्रति प्रतिबद्ध हैं
          2. रक्षा एवं सेना - संघर्ष विराम उल्लंघनों पर प्रतिक्रिया व्यक्त करते हुए थलसेनाध्यक्ष जनरल बिपिन रावत ने पाकिस्तान को चेतावनी दी है कि शांति की हमारी चाह हमारी कमजोरी नहीं है। उन्होंने जवानों को भी सामाजिक मीडिया में किये जाने वाले विडियो पोस्ट के माध्यम से अनुशासन भंग करने के विरुद्ध चेतावनी दी है
          3. भारतीय राजनीति - कई महीनों के असमंजस को समाप्त करते हुए भाजपा छोड़ने वाले क्रिकेट खिलाडी-कवि-राजनेता नवजोत सिंह सिद्धू ने अंततः कांग्रेस (आई) में प्रवेश कर लिया है। आगामी विधानसभा चुनाव में वे अमृतसर पूर्व सीट से चुनाव लड़ेंगे
          4. समाज एवं संस्कृति - जो चीजें पश्चिम में नाराज विरोध खड़ा नहीं कर सकती हैं वे पूर्व में खतरनाक हो सकती हैं। महात्मा गाँधी के चित्रों के साथ की गई छेड़-छाड़ को अमेजन पर बेचा जा रहा था। आलोचकों का कहना है कि अमेजन विश्व के सबसे बड़े में से एक उभरते हुए बाजार के विषय में गंभीर नहीं है और केवल अक्खडपन (घमंड) में इसे अत्यंत हलके में ले रहा है
          5. विश्व राजनीति - सीआईए के निदेशक जॉन ब्रेन्नन ने डॉनल्ड ट्रम्प को याद दिलाया है कि वे उनके द्वारा कहे गए प्रत्येक शब्द को सावधानीपूर्वक परख लें (उनका संदर्भ खुफिया समुदाय की नाजी जर्मनी के साथ तुलना को लेकर था), साथ ही उन्होंने उन्हें रूस से भी सावधान रहने को कहा है। अपमानजनक सबूतों के साथ एक कथित फाइल वाशिंगटन में उजागर होने के बाद से ट्रम्प आलोचना के घेरे मे हैं
          6. विश्व राजनीति - जहाँ एक ओर डॉनल्ड ट्रम्प ने एक-चीन नीति सहित सभी लंबे समय से चले आ रहे सिद्धांतों को चुनौती देने का संकल्प लिया है, वहीँ चीन के राष्ट्रपति शी जिनपिंग दावोस में आयोजित होने वाले विश्व आर्थिक मंच को संबोधित करेंगे। इसके कारण आगे चिंगारियां उठने की संभावना है
          7. भारतीय अर्थव्यवस्था - अंतर्राष्ट्रीय श्रम संगठन (आईएलओ) ने अनुमान लगाया है कि वर्ष 2018 तक बेरोजगारों की संख्या वर्ष 2016 के 1.77 करोड़ से बढ़कर 1.8 करोड़ हो जाएगी, परंतु वर्ष 2017 में बेरोजगारी की दर 3.5 प्रतिशत से घटकर 3.4 प्रतिशत रहेगी। भारी संख्या में रोजगार निर्मिती एनडीए सरकार के लिए काफी चुनौतीपूर्ण होगा, जो स्किल इंडिया कार्यक्रम को आगे बढ़ा रही है
          8. निगम - सरकार चाहती है कि रिलायंस कृष्णा-गोदावरी नदीघाटी गैस भंडार के सार्वजनिक क्षेत्र के उपक्रम ओएनजीसी के साथ साझा उपक्रम से अधिक गैस उत्खनन के कथित आरोपों के लिए 1.55 अरब डॉलर का भुगतान करे। जबकि इसपर पंचनिर्णय जारी है, उसी समय तेल मंत्रालय ने इसपर कानूनी राय मांगी है कि क्या वह दंड राशि की वसूली पर आगे बढे अथवा नहीं
          9. क्रीडा एवं खेल - कोहली युग की शुरुआत धमाकेदार हुई, जहाँ भारत ने इंग्लैंड के विरुद्ध हुए पहले एक-दिवसीय मुकाबले में अप्रत्याशित विजय प्राप्त की, जिसमें विराट कोहली और केदार जाधव, दोनों ने शतक लगाए और 7 विकेट पर विशाल 350 रन बनाने वाली बिखरी हुई इंग्लिश टीम के विरुद्ध जीत को संभव बनाया
          10. विज्ञान एवं प्रौद्योगिकी - एलोन मस्क के स्पेस एक्स ने कैलिफोर्निया से एक अंतरिक्ष उड़ान सफलतापूर्वक संपन्न की, जिस दौरान सितंबर 2016 में फ्लोरिडा में हुए विनाशकारी विस्फोट के बाद उसने इरीडियम दूरसंचार के लिए 10 उपग्रह कक्षा में स्थापित किये

        • 1. The Central Statistics Office (CSO) is the apex body for coordinating statistical activities in India, headed by a Director General. It puts out the national income figures regularly.
          2. The National Accounts Division (NAD) prepares national accounts, including Gross Domestic Product (GDP), Government and Private Final Consumption Expenditure, Fixed Capital Formation (GFCF) etc. Since these affect the entire debate on Indian economy, the CSO is always the focus of attention!
          3. An annual publication – the “National Accounts Statistics” – carries the main ideas and figures.
          4. NAD also prepares quarterly GDP estimates at current and constant prices, estimates Capital Stock and Consumption of Fixed Capital, estimates State-wise Gross Value Added and Gross Fixed Capital Formation of major sectors (Railways, Communication, Banking & Insurance and Central Government Administration).
          5. The Chief Statistician of India is Mr. T.C.A. Anant. He also is the secretary of the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI), under which the CSO operates.
          6. The Economic Statistics Division (ESD) conducts the crucial Economic Censuses and Annual Surveys of Industries (ASI). It also compiles All India Index of Industrial Production (IIP), something that indicates the general direction of our economy.
          7. Since 2014, when the base year for calculation of GDP estimates was changed to 2011-12, there has been a constant debate over how valid the new numbers are.
          8. India is one of the few large economies in the world, whose growth rates are consistently above 6%. The other is China. All the others have struggles since 2008 Recession to maintain high rates.
          9. The Chinese economy is said to be reeling under a huge debt crisis – the Debt Bubble – which can burst in any quarter exposing large sections of over-leveraged industries. It can directly harm economies like Australia which have deep commodity ties with China.
          10. India’s economy is largely composed of the informal sector, which is a great contributor to employment and GDP numbers. Demonetisation will change its dynamics ultimately.
        • 1. केंद्रीय सांख्यिकी कार्यालय (सीएसओ) भारत में सांख्यिकी गतिविधियों के समन्वय के लिए शीर्ष निकाय है जिसका नेतृत्व महानिदेशक करते हैं। यह राष्ट्रीय आय के आंकड़ों को नियमित रूप से जारी करता है
          2. राष्ट्रीय लेखा प्रभाग (एनएडी) राष्ट्रीय लेखा तैयार करता है, जिसमें सकल घरेलू आय (जीडीपी), सरकारी और निजी अंतिम उपभोग व्यय, स्थिर पूँजी निर्माण (जीएफसीएफ) इत्यादि  भी शामिल होते हैं। चूंकि ये भारतीय अर्थव्यवस्था की समस्त बहस को प्रभावित करते हैं अतः केंद्रीय सांख्यिकी कार्यालय हमेशा ध्यानाकर्षण के केंद्र में रहता है
          3. एक वार्षिक प्रकाशन - “राष्ट्रीय लेखा सांख्यिकी”- में मुख्य विचार और आंकडे होते हैं 
          4.           एनएडी वर्तमान एवं स्थिर मूल्यों पर जीडीपी के तिमाही अनुमान भी तैयार करता है, स्थिर पूँजी के पूँजी संग्रह और उपभोग के अनुमान व्यक्त करता है, प्रमुख क्षेत्रों (रेलवे, दूरसंचार, बैंकिंग एवं बीमा, और केंद्र सरकार का प्रशासन) के राज्य-वार सकल मूल्य वर्धित और सकल स्थिर पूँजी के अनुमान व्यक्त करता है 
          5.           भारत के मुख्य सांख्यिकीविद श्री टी. सी. ए. अनंत हैं। वे सांख्यिकी एवं कार्यक्रम क्रियान्वयन मंत्रालय के सचिव भी हैं, जिसके अंतर्गत केंद्रीय सांख्यिकी कार्यालय कार्य करता है
          6.           आर्थिक सांख्यिकी प्रभाग (ईएसडी) महत्वपूर्ण आर्थिक जनगणना और वार्षिक औद्योगिक सर्वेक्षण भी आयोजित करता है। यह अखिल-भारतीय औद्योगिक उत्पादन सूचकांक (आईआईपी) का संकलन भी करता है, यह वह है जो हमारी अर्थव्यवस्था की सामान्य दिशा को इंगित करता है 
          7.           वर्ष 2014 से, जब से जीडीपी अनुमानों की गणना के आधार वर्ष को 2011-12 के रूप में परिवर्तित किया गया, तभी से नये आंकड़ों की वैधता निरंतर बहस का विषय बनी हुई है 
          8.           भारत विश्व की कुछ चुनी हुई विशाल अर्थव्यवस्थाओं में से एक है जिसकी वृद्धि दर लगातार 6 प्रतिशत से अधिक बनी हुई है। ऐसी दूसरी अर्थव्यवस्था चीन की अर्थव्यवस्था है। विश्व की अन्य सभी अर्थव्यवस्थाएं वर्ष 2008 की मंदी के बाद से उच्च वृद्धि दरें बनाए रखने के लिए संघर्षरत रही हैं 
          9.           ऐसा कहा जा रहा है कि चीन की अर्थव्यवस्था विशाल ऋण संकट - ऋण के बुलबुले - की चपेट में है जो किसी भी तिमाही में फूट सकता है जिसके परिणामस्वरूप  अति-लाभ वाले बड़े वर्ग अनावृत्त हो सकते हैं। यह सीधे तौर पर ऑस्ट्रेलिया जैसी अर्थव्यवस्थाओं के लिए हानिकारक हो सकता है जिनके चीन के साथ गहरे वस्तु संबंध हैं 
          10.           भारत की अर्थव्यवस्था मोटे तौर पर अनौपचारिक क्षेत्र से निर्मित है जो रोजगार और जीडीपी आंकड़ों का बड़ा और महत्वपूर्ण योगदानकर्ता है। विमुद्रीकरण इसकी गतिकी को अंततः परिवर्तित कर देगा
