        • 1. Indian politics – AIADMK General Secretary Ms. Sasikala met the Governor and staked her claim to form the new government in Tamil Nadu. However, the suspense continued. He may seek advice from the Centre or could seek legal opinion.
          2. Indian politics – Campaigning in the first phase of the high-voltage UP assembly elections for 73 seats in Western Uttar Pradesh ended on Thursday with all major parties and alliances making a last bit effort. The UP assembly elections are important both for the SP-Congress alliance and the BJP.
          3. Terrorism – Even as Pakistan has put Lashkar chief Hafiz Saeed under house arrest, there are no signs of its training activities having been shut down. He has floated a new outfit to continue with his terrorist designs. There is a likelihood of an end to these activities only if the fears of Pakistan facing sanctions from Trump administration are realized.
          4. Indian economy – GSTN (Goods and Service Tax Network) has rejected a request from CAG to appoint an auditor and conduct a supplementary audit for all government companies, as is being done now.
          5. World politics – India has strongly criticized China for blocking a proposal to list Jaish-e-Mohammad chief Masood Azhar as a global terrorist at the UN. The proposal was moved by three permanent members of the UN Security Council – US, UK and France. China has been using its muscle to block the move for quite some time saying that there was no concensus on the issue.
          6. World politics – In another set back to the Trump administration on the issue of President Trump’s Executive Order banning US visa holders from 7 Muslim countries from entering the US. An appeals court rejected its plea to overturn a lower court’s stay. Trump has termed the decision as political.
          7. Defence and military – Pakistan has claimed that India is building a secret nuclear city to produce thermonuclear weapons and develop intercontinental missiles. India has dismissed the allegations as baseless.
          8. Persons and personalities – NASA has shortlisted an Indian-origin physician, Dr. Shawna Pandya, currently based in Canada for its 2018 space mission under its Citizen Science Astronaut (CSA) programme.
          9. World politics – Although there may be uncertainties over the emerging political and economic ties between India and the US, there are no such uncertainties on the defence cooperation front. Both countries have agreed to sustain and take forward their bilateral defence cooperation, key to their strategic partnership.
          10. Companies, products and services – Three founders of Infosys – N. R. Narayana Murthy, Kris Gopalakrishnan and Nandan Nilekani – had voiced their concerns over the pay hike to CEO Vishal Sikka and severance package to two former officials of the company. However, the Company has come in support of the CEO and said that the issue was a couple of  months old and that the company has clarified its position on the issue from time to time.

        • 1. भारतीय राजनीति - अन्ना द्रमुक महासचिव शशिकला ने गुरुवार को राज्यपाल के समक्ष तमिलनाडु में नई सरकार बनाने का दावा प्रस्तुत किया। हालांकि इसके साथ राज्य की राजनीतिक स्थिति में आई अनिश्चितता अभी समाप्त नहीं हुई है। संभवतः वे इस विषय में केंद्र सरकार की सलाह ले सकते हैं या कानूनी सलाह ले सकते हैं।
          2. भारतीय राजनीति - विधानसभा चुनाव के पहले चरण के मतदान के लिए चुनाव प्रचार का कार्य गुरुवार शाम समाप्त हो गया। पहले चरण में पश्चिमी उत्तरप्रदेश की 73 विधानसभा सीटों पर 11 फरवरी को मतदान होना है। प्रचार के अंतिम दिन सभी दलों और गठबंधनों ने अपना पूरा जोर लगा दिया था। ये चुनाव सपा-कांग्रेस गठबंधन और भाजपा की दृष्टि से काफी महत्वपूर्ण हैं।
          3. आतंकवाद - हालांकि पाकिस्तान ने लश्कर-ए-तैयबा प्रमुख हाफिज सईद को नजरबंद किया है परंतु फिर भी कश्मीर घाटी में उसकी आतंकवादी प्रशिक्षण गतिविधियाँ खत्म नहीं हुई हैं। अपनी आतंकवादी गतिविधियों को अंजाम देने के लिए उसने नया संगठन बनाया है। यदि पाकिस्तान पर अमेरिका द्वारा प्रस्तावित प्रतिबंध वास्तविकता में बदलता है तभी ये गतिविधियाँ बंद होने की संभावना है।
          4. भारतीय अर्थव्यवस्था - जीएसटीएन (वस्तु एवं सेवा कर नेटवर्क) ने कैग के उस अनुरोध को अस्वीकार कर दिया है जिसमें कहा गया था कि वह एक लेखा परीक्षक की नियुक्ति करे और सभी सरकारी कंपनियों का एक पूरक लेखा परीक्षण करे, जैसा कि वर्तमान में किया जा रहा है।
          5. विश्व राजनीति - जैश-ए-मोहम्मद प्रमुख मसूद अजहर को अंतर्राष्ट्रीय आतंकवादी घोषित करने के लिए संयुक्त राष्ट्र में लाए गए एक प्रस्ताव को चीन द्वारा रोके जाने पर भारत ने चीन की कड़ी आलोचना की है। यह प्रस्ताव संयुक्त राष्ट्र सुरक्षा परिषद के तीन स्थाई सदस्यों - अमेरिका, यूके और फ्रांस - द्वारा लाया गया था। चीन पूर्व में भी इस विषय पर यह कहकर रोक लगाता रहा है कि इसपर आमसहमति नहीं है।
          6. विश्व राजनीति - अमेरिका के एक अपीलीय न्यायालय ने ट्रम्प प्रशासन को एक और झटका दिया है। ट्रम्प प्रशासन द्वारा 7 मुस्लिम देशों के अमेरिकी वीजा धारकों पर अमेरिका प्रवेश पर प्रतिबंध लगाने के लिए जारी कार्यकारी आदेश को स्थगित करने के निचली अदालत के निर्णय को निरस्त करने के लिए प्रशासन द्वारा दायर याचिका को न्यायालय ने खारिज कर दिया है।
          7. रक्षा और सेना - पाकिस्तान ने दावा किया है कि भारत थर्मोन्युक्लियर हथियारों के निर्माण और अंतर-महाद्वीपीय मिसाइलों के विकास के लिए एक गुप्त परमाणु शहर का निर्माण कर रहा है। भारत ने पाकिस्तान के कथित आरोप को आधारहीन बताया है।
          8. व्यक्ति और व्यक्तित्व - नासा ने अपने नागरिक वैज्ञानिक अंतरिक्षयात्री कार्यक्रम के तहत होने वाले वर्ष 2018 के अंतरिक्ष अभियान के लिए भारतीय मूल की चिकित्सक डॉ. शावना पंड्या, जो वर्तमान में कनाडा में स्थित हैं, को चयनित व्यक्तियों की अल्प-सूची में स्थान दिया है। यदि वे चुनी जाति हैं तो अंतरिक्ष में जाने वाली भारतीय मूल की तीसरी महिला होंगी।
          9. विश्व राजनीति - हालांकि नए अमेरिकी प्रशासन के आने के बाद भारत और अमेरिका के बीच राजनीतिक और आर्थिक संबंधों पर अनिश्चितता की स्थिति बनी हुई है परंतु रक्षा सहयोग पर दोनों देशों के बीच कोई अनिश्चितता नहीं है। दोनों देशों ने अपने द्विपक्षीयरक्षा सहयोग को धारणीय बनाने और इसे आगे ले जाने पर सहमती जताई है।
          10. कंपनियां, उत्पाद और सेवाएँ - इंफोसिस के तीन संस्थापकों दृ एन. आर. नारायणमूर्ति, क्रिस गोपालकृष्णन और नंदन निलेकणी - ने मुख्य कार्यकारी अधिकारी विशाल सिक्का को प्रदान की गई वेतन वृद्धि और दो पूर्व अधिकारियों को दिए गए विच्छेद पैकेज पर चिंता व्यक्त की थी। हालांकि इंफोसिस ने विशाल सिक्का का समर्थन किया है और कहा है कि मुख्य कार्यकारी अधिकारी वेतन और पूर्व अधिकारियों के विच्छेद पैकेज का मुद्दा कुछ महीने पुराना है जिसपर कंपनी की स्थिति लगातार स्पष्ट की गई है।

        • 1. Global warming is the rise in the earth’s surface temperature due to the emission of greenhouse gases generated due to extensive burning of fossil fuels. Although greenhouse gases are important as they make Earth worth-living (otherwise it would be a very cold planet not worth living), excess concentration of those gases leads to imbalance in atmospheric temperature regulation.
          2. The IPCC is “Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change”. It consists of a group of scientists entrusted with the task of assessing global climate change by United Nations Environment Programme.
          3. This increase in the Earth’s temperature has resulted in an acceleration in the melting of most of the world’s glaciers. Although some scientists do not quite agree to this, but it seems this may be true.
          4. Greenhouse gases hold back the sun’s energy reflected by the earth. This heat is further directed towards the surface resulting into rising temperature.
          5. The most important greenhouse gases are carbon dioxide and methane. They are released in the atmosphere as a result of the extraction, processing and burning of fossil fuels and also due to large-scale industrial activities.
          6. Global warming results in more frequent coastal floods, heat waves, events of extreme precipitation and urban vulnerability.
          7. From 1880 to 2012, average increase in global temperature was 0.850 C. For every 1 degree increase in temperature, grains yields decline by 5%.
          8. From 1901 to 2010, the average global sea level rose by 19 cm due to expansion of oceans on account of melting ice.
          9. Implementation of the Paris Agreement is essential for achieving Sustainable Development Goals. It provides a roadmap for climate actions to reduce emissions.
          10. Climate change experts and environmentalists are worried about the potential impact of Trump administration policies, as President Trump has rejected the climate change concerns earlier.
        • 1. वैश्विक उष्मन जीवाश्म ईंधनों के अत्यधिक मात्रा में जलने के कारण पैदा हुई ग्रीनहाउस गैसों के उत्सर्जन के कारण पृथ्वी की सतह के तापमान में होने वाली रुद्धि को कहा जाता है। हालाँकि ग्रीनहाउस गैसें महत्वपूर्ण हैं चूंकि वे पृथ्वी को जीवन-योग्य बनाती हैं (अन्यथा पृथ्वी एक बेहद ठंडा गृह होता जहाँ जीवन असंभव होता), किन्तु उनकी अधिक सांद्रता वायुमंडलीय तापमान विनियमन को असंतुलित कर स्थितियां बिगड़ देती हैं।.
          2. आईपीसीसी जलवायु परिवर्तन पर एक अंतर-शासन समूह है। इसमें वैज्ञानिकों का एक समूह शामिल है जिसे संयुक्त राष्ट्र पर्यावरण कार्यक्रम द्वारा वैश्विक जलवायु परिवर्तन का आकलन करने का कार्य सौंपा गया है।
          3. पृथ्वी के तापमान में हुई इस वृद्धि का परिणाम विश्व के अधिकांश हिमनदों के पिघलने में हुआ है। हालाँकि कुछ वैज्ञानिक इससे सहमत नहीं, किन्तु लगता है कि ऐसा हो रहा है।
          4. ग्रीनहाउस गैसें पृथ्वी द्वारा परावर्तित सूर्य की ऊर्जा को रोके रखती हैं। यह गर्मी आगे पृथ्वी की सतह की ओर निर्देशित होती है जिसके कारण तापमान में वृद्धि होती है।
          5. सबसे महत्वपूर्ण ग्रीनहाउस गैसें हैं कार्बन डाइऑक्साइड और मीथेन। वायुमंडल में इनका उत्सर्जन जीवाश्म ईंधनों के निष्कर्षण, प्रसंस्करण, और ज्वलन और अत्यधिक औद्योगिक गतिविधियों के कारण होता है।
          6. वैश्विक उष्मन का परिणाम बारंबार होने वाली तटीय बाढ़ों, गर्म लहरों, अति वर्षा की घटनाओं और शहरी भेद्यता में होता है।
          7. वर्ष 1880 से 2012 तक वैश्विक तापमान में औसत वृद्धि 0.85 अंश सेल्सियस थी। तापमान में हुई प्रत्येक 1 अंश वृद्धि के कारण अनाजों के उत्पदसं में 5 प्रतिशत की कमी होती है।
          8. वर्ष 1901 से 2010 तक वैश्विक समुद्री सतह में औसत वृद्धि 19 सेंटीमीटर थी, जो बर्फ के पिघलने के कारण हुए महासागरों के फैलाव के कारण हुई।
          9. धारणीय विकास लक्ष्यों की प्राप्ति की दृष्टि से पेरिस समझौते का क्रियान्वयन अनिवार्य है। यह उत्सर्जनों को कम करने के किये जाने वाले कार्यों की रूपरेखा बताता है।
          10. जलवायु परिवर्तन विशेषज्ञ एवं पर्यावरणविद ट्रम्प प्रशासन की नीतियों के संभावित प्रभावों को लेकर चिंतित हैं, चूंकि ट्रम्प ने जलवायु परिवर्तन चिंताओं को पहले खारिज किया है          ।
