Indian economy – As per latest CSO data (Central Statistics Office), the Indian economy grew by a faster-than-expected 7 per cent in fiscal third quarter (down from Q2’s 7.4%), although demonetisation had impacted both output and consumption. 2. Indian politics – Strong remarks by BJP leader Sakshi Maharaj created an uproar as he suggested that even Muslims should go for cremation (daah) and not burying their dead, as there is little space in India. The UP elections have seen strong verbal attacks by all camps on each other, as the stakes are enormously high for top leaders.
3. Society and culture – There is a raging battle of words and wits in national capital Delhi, reminiscent of the intolerance brouhaha, where both the “liberal camp” and the “nationalist camp” are trying to outdo each other. The lady who started the social media quarrels, a young Gurmehar Kaur, has withdrawn from the street protests.
4. People and personalities – In a strong tweet, famous Bollywood personality Javed Akhtar questioned some sportspersons who had questioned Gurmehar Kaur (through their tweets) by calling them “hardly literate players or wrestlers”. This brazen display of “literacy credentials” has not gone down well with many.
5. 6. World politics – President Donald Trump, who has sworn to dismantle the healthcare plans put in place by the Obama administration, recently admitted that healthcare system in the US is “so complicated”!
7. Science and technology – The Hyperloop, which uses a pod-like vehicle travelling through near-vacuum contained within a tube, and can be used for high-speed passenger and freight transportation, may make an entry in India if the plans of California-based Hyperloop One to deploy it on the Kolkata-Chennai freight route by 2021 bear fruit.
8. World politics - France criticised Russia for vetoing a UN resolution imposing sanctions on Syria over chemical weapons use, and said Russia bore a "heavy responsibility towards the Syrian people and humanity as a whole". France and Britain had drafted the Security Council resolution alongside the United States. Russia, a permanent member of the council, vetoed it along with China. 9. Companies, products, services – Elon Musk’s SpaceX – an ambitious rocket company – plans to send a couple of tourists around the moon and back to Earth before the end of 2018! Two private individuals approached the company to see if SpaceX would be willing to send them on a weeklong cruise, which would fly past the surface of the moon, but not land. Elon Musk versus ISRO? 10. Regional politics – Pakistan is hosting a regional economic summit of the Economic Cooperation Organisation (ECO), with leaders of 10 countries (Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan etc.) attending to finalize a plan for expanding trade and prosperity among member nations. Turkey, Iran and Pakistan were the three ECO founding members in 1985. China will attend as an observer.

4. व्यक्ति और व्यक्तित्व - एक कड़वे ट्वीट में प्रसिद्ध बालीवुड व्यक्तित्व जावेद अख्तर ने उन खिलाडियों पर सवाल उठाये जिन्होंने अपने ट्वीट्स के जरिये गुरमेहर कौर पर सवाल उठाये थे, और जावेद ने उन्हें ‘‘कम पढ़े लिखे खिलाड़ी और पहलवान’’ करार दिया। इस प्रकार उद्दंडता से स्वयं का शिक्षित होने का प्रचार करना कईयों को रास नहीं आ रहा है।

7. विज्ञान एवं प्रौद्योगिकी - हाईपरलूप तकनीक, जिसमें एक गोल वाहन को एक ट्यूब के भीतर शून्यक (वैक्यूम) जैसी स्थिति में चलाया जाता है, और जिसका इस्तेमाल दु्रुत गति से यात्री और माल परिवाहन हेतु किया जा सकता है, उसका भारत में प्रवेश हो जायेगा यदि कैलिफोर्निया स्थिति कंपनी हाईपरलूप वन की कलकत्ता-चैन्नई मार्ग पर 2021 तक लाने की योजना सफल हो गई तो।

10. क्षेत्रीय राजनीति - पाकिस्तान 10 अन्य देशों के नेताओं के साथ (जैसे तजिकिस्तान, तुर्कमेनिस्तान, अज़रबैजान, कजाकस्तान, किर्गीस्तान आदि) एक क्षेत्रीय-आर्थिक सम्मेलन आयोजित कर रहा है जो आर्थिक संयोग संगठन (ईसीओ) के झंडे तले हो रहा है। इसका लक्ष्य है सदस्य देशों के बीच व्यापार और समृद्धि को बढ़ाना। तुर्की, ईरान और पाकिस्तान ने 1985 में संगठन की स्थापना की थी। चीन पर्यवेक्षक के रूप में भागीदारी रखेगा।

- Day Facts for 01-03-2017 - FOREIGN AFFAIRS – The Modi Doctrine
- 1. In August 2016, PM Modi summed up Indian foreign policy approach with the phrase "India First”. This showed India's commitment to protect its strategic interests and a search for greater prosperity and development at home. The Modi doctrine is led by vision and implemented through delivery.
2. The diplomatic engagements are being leveraged to advance domestic flagship programmes like Make in India, Digital India, Skill India or Smart Cities. A tight meshing of domestic and diplomatic goals is a hallmark of the Modi Doctrine. As per the External Affairs Minister, it has led not only to flagship programmes accessing greater technology, capital and best practices but also to a marked improvement in FDI flows.
3. The first diplomatic move on its inauguration day by inviting leaders of neighbouring nations, was later expanded into a ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy that stresses cooperation, connectivity and greater people to people contacts. By visiting virtually all our neighbours himself, PM Modi has articulated a strong message of regional prosperity.
4. The global order has not just become more multi-polar, but an overall loosening of relationships has happened and even countries that are formal allies are now hedging. Though the world as a whole is more globalised, distinct regional dynamics have also emerged. The arrival of a strongly nationalist Trump administration is the recent example. 5. As a result, effective diplomacy increasingly calls for simultaneously engaging competing powers. It is now an exercise to manage differences and expand areas of agreement. Consequently, remaining passive to international developments is no longer an option. Hence, the ideological baggage of Non Aligned Movement is now dumped, and India confidently engages other major powers.
6. An India aspiring to a greater global role must necessarily have a larger diplomatic footprint, either through more Embassies and a larger foreign service, or more immediately by broader and frequent engagements with other leaderships. The impact of a high-frequency global visit calendar has been dramatic on the world’s perception of India, as many earlier gaps were filled.
7. Both bilaterally and multilaterally, many developments happened. The Indian Africa Summit was expanded from the earlier 17 nations to its full complement of 54. For the first time, a summit of Pacific Island states with India was held, not just in that region but in India as well. 8. In an era where global issues are talked about regularly, Indians representing one-sixth of humanity must do their utmost on challenges that will determine the future of our planet. India had a key role to play in the Paris Agreement on Climate Change and also took the lead in creating the International Solar Alliance. To counter the menace of cross-border terrorism, India has unrelentingly put the spotlight on early conclusion of a Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism, though with stiff resistance from some big powers. 9. The Indian diaspora wields considerable influence in many nations. Our country makes as much by services and remittances as it does by trade in Goods. The Modi Government has broken new ground in appreciating their contribution, enhancing their standing and protecting their interests. The government has tried to bring about a change in systemic attitudes towards them – whether it is in faster issue of passports at home, better consular responses abroad, or even in major evacuation operations like Yemen, Iraq, Libya or South Sudan.
10. 2. विभिन्न कूटनीतिक आदान-प्रदानों को प्रमुख घरेलू कार्यक्रमों जैसे कि मेक इन इंडिया, डिजिटल इंडिया, स्किल इंडिया या स्मार्ट सिटी प्रोजेक्ट्स को आगे बढ़ाने हेतु किया जा रहा है। घरेलू और कूटनीतिक लक्ष्यों का आपस में ताल-मेल मोदी सिद्धांत का प्रमुख पहलू है। विदेश मंत्री के अनुसार, ऐसा करने से न केवल हमारे प्रमुख कार्यक्रमों को अधिक तकनीक, पूंजी और बेहतर कार्यप्रणालियां मिल रही हैं, बल्कि विदेशी प्रत्यक्ष पूंजी निवेश भी बढ़ रहा है।
3. सरकार के उद्घाटन दिवस पर पड़ोसी देशों के नेताओं को आमंत्रित करने के पहले कूटनीतिक कदम के साथ, बाद में इसे विस्तारित कर ‘‘पड़ोसी प्रथम’’ नीति में तब्दील किया गया जिसमें आपसी सहयोग, संयोजकता और अधिक नागरिक संपर्क शामिल हैं। लगभग सभी पड़ोसी देशों में स्वयं यात्रा कर, प्रधानमंत्री मोदी ने क्षेत्रीय समृद्धि का बड़ा संदेश दिया है।
4. वैश्विक व्यवस्था अब न केवल बहु-ध्रुवीय हो चुकी है, किंतु रिश्तों में बहुत ढिलाई भी आती जा रही है और वे देश जो पहले औपचारिक रूप से मित्र थे वे भी नई संभावनाऐं तलाश रहे हैं। हालांकि विश्व अधिक वैश्विकृत हो चुका है, विशिष्ट क्षेत्रीय गतिकिया भी उत्पन्न हो चुकी है। एक कट्टर राष्ट्रवादी ट्रंप प्रशासन का आगमन एक नवीन उदाहरण है। विश्व राजनीति के विर्वतनिक परिवर्तन पर हमारी बोधि यहां पढ़ें।
5. इसके फलस्वरूप, प्रभावी कूटनीति हेतु हमें एक साथ प्रतिस्पर्धी शक्तियों के साथ संतुलन जमाना होगा। अब यह प्रक्रिया आपसी अंतरों का प्रबंधन करने और सहमति पूर्ण क्षेत्रों का विस्तार करने की हो गई है। अत: अंतर्राष्ट्रीय घटनाक्रम के प्रति शांत बैठे रहना अब एक विकल्प नहीं रह गया है। अतः, गुटनिरपेक्ष आंदोलन का वैचारिक बोझ त्याग कर भारत अब प्रमुख शक्तियों के साथ बात करने लगा है।
6. एक भारत जो एक वृहद वैश्विक भूमिका हेतु प्रयासरत है उसे एक विस्तारित कूटनीतिक पदचिन्ह बनाना होगा, जो कि अधिक दूतावासों और एक विस्तारित विदेश सेवा से होगा, या निकट भविश्य में अन्य नेतृत्वों के साथ अधिक गहरी संलग्नता से। बड़ी तेज़ गति से विश्व भर में भ्रमण करने के कैलेंडर की वजह से भारत की छवि पर नाटकीय प्रभाव पड़ा है, क्योंकि पहले से मौजूद अनेक कमियों को भरा गया।

9. भारतीय प्रवासी अनेक देशों में बेहद प्रभावशील हैं, हमारा देश जितना सेवाओं के व्यापार और प्रेक्षण से उतना कमाता है जितना वस्तु व्यापार से। मोदी सरकार ने इस योगदान की प्रशंसा करने में नये कदम उठाये है, जिससे उनकी प्रतिष्ठा और उनके हितों का बेहतर संवर्धन होगा। सरकार का प्रयास रहा है कि व्यवस्था की सोच उनके प्रति बदले - फिर वो पासपोर्टो को त्वरित रूप से जारी करना हो, विदेश में दूतावासों से बेहतर प्रतिक्रिया की बात हो या यमन, ईराक, लिबिया या दक्षिण सूडान से बचाव अभियानों की बात हो।
