        • 1.Companies, products, services – The public spat over governance between the founders of Infosys and its board of directors is flaring up instead of dying down. Company CEO Vishal Sikka defended the proposed pay hike to Chief Operating Officer Pravin Rao saying that it was crucial to retain talent.
          2. Demonetization – A Delhi court has barred the media from reporting a case involving two bank officials of Axis Bank for alleged irregularities relating to conversion old currency and supply of new notes. Earlier, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) filed a charge sheet, the first in money laundering so far, against the accused persons.
          3. World politics – Senior adviser to President Trump, Jared Kushner, who is visiting Iraq met Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi to discuss the fight against the Islamic State (IS) and whether the United States would leave troops in Iraq afterward.
          4. Persons and personalities – – Amidst protests from China, Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama will reach Arunachal Pradesh from Guwahati today. Arunachal Pradesh and Tawang have been a bone of contention between India and China. China has warned India against the visit of Dalai Lama.
          5. World politics– The US administration started to deliver on President Trump’s campaign promise to crack down on a work visa programme that allows skilled overseas workers to companies across the technology industry. Acknowledging that there were problems with the guest worker visa programme, the US administration began enforcing tighter normson issuance of H1-B visas.
          6. Indian politics – The first cabinet meeting of the new BJP led UP government will be held today. The key issues in the BJP’s poll manifesto, especially farm loan waiver, electricity in rural areas and an ordinance on slaughter houses are likely to be taken up. The Prime Minister, during his election campaign, had said that the loans of farmers would be waived in the first cabinet meeting if the BJP was voted to power.
          7. Education – The Ministry of Human Resources Development (HRD) released the list of the top 10 educational institutions in the country. Indian Institute of Science (IISc ) Bengaluru is placed at the top of the list. Seven IITs also find a place in the list. In the universities category, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) Delhi was ranked second.
          8. World politics – US ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley said that the US would try and find its place in the efforts to de-escalate Indo-Pak tension and not wait for something to happen. This appears to be a shift in the US stance of not engaging in Indo-Pak disputes. The previous administration under Barack Obama had maintained that Kashmir was a bilateral issue between India and Pakistan.
          9. Terrorism – 11 people were killed and over 45 injured in explosions in two train carriages at metro stations in St. Petersburg in Russia. President Putin, who was in St. Petersburg, said the cause of the explosions was not yet clear, but he was considering all possibilities including terrorism.
          10. Regional politics – Ahead of her India visit later this week, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said her country would not harbor any militant groups hostile to India. Her assurance came during her meeting with General Bipin Rawat, India’s Army Chief. General Rawat is on a three-day visit to Bangladesh.
