- 1. Indian politics – As promised in the BJP’s election manifesto, UP government under Yogi Adityanath, waives farmers’ crop loans up to Rs. 1 lakh in its first cabinet meeting benefiting around 86 lakh small and marginal farmers of the state. The waiver would incur a total cost of over Rs. 36,000 crore. In another important cabinet decision, the government also decided to set up 700 wheat procurement centres to directly purchase wheat from farmers. The procurement trget has been fixed at 80 lakh metric tonnes.
2. World politics – A suspected Syrian government chemical attack killed at least 100 people. The Trump administration has blamed Syrian President Bashar al-Asad and former US President Barack Obama for the attack. The Syrian government and the military, have however, denied its involvement in the attack.
3. Regional politics – Reacting to US Ambassador to UN Nikki Haley’s statement on US intervention in de-escalating tension between India and Pakistan, India’s External Affairs Ministry spokesperson said that Government’s position for bilateral redressal of all India-Pakistan issues in an environment free of terror and violence hasn’t changed. India has always rejected third party intervention in India-Pakistan relations.
4. Defence and military – Nuclear-armed North Korea once again fired a KN-15 medium-range ballistic missile into the Sea of Japan, days after it warned of retaliation if the global community ramps up sanctions. Japan condemned the launch and said it violated UN Security Council resolutions.
5. Demonetization – After demonetization of the Rs. 1000 and Rs. 500 denomination notes in November 2016, the RBI in its board meeting has now cleared a proposal to introduce notes of Rs. 200 denomination. The decision to introduce a new denomination note is to revise the currency mix in the Indian market. While currency worth Rs. 17.9 trillion was in circulation prior to demonetization, the amount stands at Rs. 13.12 trillion as of March 24.
6. World politics – US President Donald Trump signed an executive order that revokes the Fair Pay and Safe Workplaces Order instituted by Obama’s 2014 order, which demanded companies that accepted federal contracts comply with 14 laws intended to protect workers. The two specific rules in the Fair Pay order which affected women workers the most were paycheck transparency obligations and an end to “forced arbitration clauses” or “cover-up clauses” in cases of sexual harassment in the workplace.
7. World politics – As per the new H1-B visa guidelines, entry-level programmers are not eligible for the H1-B visas. In the latest development, the US Citizens and Immigration Services (USCIS), which is the agency overlooking immigration into the US, issued a memorandum suggesting that companies applying for visas under the H-1B programme must provide evidence to establish that the particular position is one in a specialty occupation.
8. World politics – Although China remains firm, some other countries, who had been opposed to India’s NSG bid, may back India. A consultative group meeting of the NSG is currently on, where India’s membership is being discussed. Germany supports the proceedings of the NSG consultative committee. The US has also reiterated its support for India’s membership.
9. Indian economy – Indian IT industry will be forced to make different efforts of doing business as governments in major markets like the US, UK and Singapore place fresh restrictions on travel and immigration of engineers that are disturbing the outsourcing model which has delivered enormous growth in the past two decades.
10. Indian politics – Aam Admi Party (AAP) and Delhi Chief Ministed Arvind Kejriwal is caught in yet another controversy over the Delhi government’s decision to pay senior advocate Ram Jethmalani from the government exchequer in the DDCA defamation case against Finance Minister Arun Jaitley. Opposition parties allege misuse of crores of public money by the Delhi government as equal to moving with corruption.
