Demonetization of currency notes of Rs. 500 and Rs. 1000 with immediate effect
In one of the biggest crackdown on black money and counterfeit currency in the economy since independence, the Modi government has demonetized currency notes of Rs.500 and Rs.1000 denominations. This is not the first time when the government has taken such a decision. Morarji Desai had demonetized higher denomination notes in 1978. However, there are many firsts in this decision - it is possibly for the first time that a PM has personally announced a decision of this magnitude on national TV, and secondly, India will soon have a Rs.2000 currency note circulating! PM Modi was categorical while making the demonetization announcement. He said that the unholy nexus between corruption, crime and terrorism needs to be broken immediately as India's entire democratic fabric itself was under threat from anti-national forces. Positive seismic shock for economy
The unexpected announcement, which few were privy to, is expected to literally lead to a reboot of the Indian economy. Among the positive shocks expected are a major push to digital online payments and the increased use of electronic wallets and credit/debit cards. Govt. will push reforms to attract more investment, plug infrastructure deficit – Finance Minister
The government has made its intentions of further opening up of the economy clear. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said that the government will speed up the reforms process further, to attract more investment to bridge the infrastructure gap. China has started work on building its first floating nuclear power reactor which it intends to deploy in the South China Sea. The concept of floating reactors was first conceived in the US, but was later abandoned. The proposed reactor of China would help power offshore facilities in its open seas. Payment of GST can be made using credit, debit cards
Individuals and companies can make the payment of GST using their credit or debit cards. Revenue Secretary Hasmukh Adhia has said that after the rollout of the GST, payments by these sources would be possible. The GST is expected from 1st April 2017.
