Fourteen coaches of the Patna bound Indore – Rajendra Nagar express train derailed at Pukhrayan railway station, about 100 km from Kanpur at 3.00 in the morning on Sunday. More than 120 people died, and more than 200 are injured in the accident. Most passengers were asleep when the accident occurred and bogies crumpled under one another. Senior railway officials, medical teams and NDRF rescue teams rushed to the spot soon after the accident and rescue operations have started. Minister of state for Railways, Manoj Sinha and Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu supervised the relief and rescue operations. In the middle of the demonetisation heat, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi was in Agra on Sunday, where he inaugurated the extremely ambitous ‘Housing for All’ scheme. Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar said he has given clear orders to the Army to directly shoot any person seen with AK-47 machine gun in hand. Addressing an election rally in Goa he said that the person with an AK-47 in hand comes with an intention to kill, hence the order. Former CBI director Ranjit Sinha has spoken in favour of legalising sports betting and gaming. According to Mr. Sinha, these activities have large revenue generation potential, and that they were popular with people. He, however, said that proper regulations should be made so that people do it in a responsible manner. After PM Narendra Modi strongly supported the idea of simultaneous elections to the Lok Sabha and state assemblies, the Law Ministry has been brainstorming on the issue. It had even asked the views of the Election Commission of India (EC) on the issue. The Commission gave a favourable response, but has said that it would need huge logistics support. Funds managers feel that the government’s demonetisation move is aimed at reducing inflation, and that the climate is ripe for investment in debt mutual funds which invest in long-term government securities. An inquiry conducted by the JNU proctor has found ABVP member Vikrant Kumar guilty of hitting and assaulting Najeeb Ahmed a day prior to the day since the student is missing. He has been asked to give an explanation as to why disciplinary action should not be initiated against him. The government has said that it would monitor accounts of small artisans, workers, housewives and other poor people whose accounts have been parked with illegal funds. The finance ministry has been receiving reports of Jan-Dhan accounts being used for conversion of black money by some elements to convert their money in to new denomination notes.
