India signed its first major deal with the US, after the 1980s Bofors scandal had erupted, worth nearly Rs.5,000 crore. The deal is for the purchase of 145 M777 ultra-light Howitzer artillery guns & was signed after the two-day meeting of the 15th India-US Military Cooperation Group in New Delhi. These will be mostly deployed near the Chinese borders. The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) had cleared the deal, considered important from India’s defence scenario in south Asia. Read NDTV

After facing three years of depressing oil prices, the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) has agreed to cut production of oil by 1.2 million barrels a day, for the first time in eight years. Falling oil prices have hurt the economies and finances of these countries and the decision would hopefully (for them) result in rising oil prices. However, it will adversely affect India’s economy in the form of increased import bills, stress on forex reserves in the wake of falling rupee prices, and inflation coupled with the impact of the recent demonetization. The UN humanitarian chief has said that parties to the Syrian conflict have openly flouted the laws of war going to any extent to gain military advantage. Some 25,000 people, most of them women and children, had been displaced from their homes in the last four days itself. Hospital facilities have been precarious in eastern Aleppo, which has been under siege for nearly 150 days and most of the people trapped inside had no means to survive much longer. Speaking at the “Make in Odisha” conclave in Bhubaneshwar, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said that the government’s decisions of implementing GST and demonetization will prove to be very beneficial. GST will help expand the revenue collection base of both the Centre and the states, and demonetization process, when complete, will bring money in banks which would be fruitfully used for the betterment of the economy, particularly the rural and agricultural economy. 5. Earthquake along Indo-Nepal border shakes Uttarakhand
Different parts of the world have been constantly experiencing earthquake shocks in the past month. The sixth such set of tremors were experienced along the Indo-Nepal border, and in the state of Uttarakhand as well on Thursday night. The intensity of the quake was 5.2 on the Richter scale, and its epicenter was in Uttarakhand along the border. Nepal's lying right over the region where the two major tectonic plates - Indo-Australian and Eurasian - meet, is the reason for great concern. Read Hindustan Times

Immediately after the RBI’s move to impose incremental CRR, economists expect a cut in the interest rates by the RBI in its next review meeting scheduled on December 9. It is felt that incremental CRR will be eventually rolled back. The Tata philanthropic trusts control Tata Sons, which is the holding company of Tata Group of companies. Income Tax department feels that they might be violating the conditions under which exemptions are granted to them. It has sent a show-cause notice to Sir Dorabji Tata Trust, Sir Ratan Tata Trust, JRD Tata Trust and RD Tata Trust to this effect. These major trusts together hold 57.74% stake in Tata Sons. Their trustees’ participation in the group’s business activity and their presence in the Group’s boards is a cause of concern for the department. Read Economic Times

The two-day Heart of Asia Conference, also called the Istanbul process, begins in Amritsar on Saturday. The Pakistani delegation is led by Pak Prime Minister’s foreign affairs advisor Sartaj Aziz. However, the Indian Foreign Ministry has denied any bilateral dialogue between the two countries during the event. There is some good news for Reliance Jio users. Reliance Chairman Mukesh Ambani announced free voice, data and video for new and existing users till March 31, 2017 under the Jio Happy New Year offer. Earlier the offer closed on December 3. He also announced Mobile Number Portability (MNP) under which all customers can retain their existing numbers on migrating to Jio.
