        • 1. Constitution and law - For the first in the history of Indian judiciary, the Supreme Court has issued a show cause notice to a sitting judge of Kolkata High Court for accusing High Court judges of corruption.
          2. Demonetisation – West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Bannerjee has once again reiterated her party’s opposition to the Central government’s demonetization move and asked the government how long people will be made to suffer.
          3. Indian politics – PM Modi launched an attack on the opposition for disrupting the winter session of Parliament on the demonetization issue. He was replying to the Motion of Thanks on the President’s address on Tuesday. He also reiterated that the move was initiated with full preparations.
          4. World politics – President Trump’s order of banning US entry to people from seven Muslim countries came under fire from a federal appeals court, which questioned whether the ban unfairly targeted people over their religion.
          5. Indian politics – DMK working president MK Stalin has urged the Governor to take necessary actions to facilitate a stable government in Tamil Nadu. Meanwhile, former Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam has said that he was forced to resign from his post.
          6. Constitution and law – The Election Commission has given yet another jolt to Sasikala and the AIADMK party in Tamil Nadu. The Commission said that no rules were followed by the party in electing its General Secretary.
          7. Defence and military – A major Navy deal to procure 16 multirole helicopters from the US is virtually dead as it has been stuck for over two years on the issue of price. The validity period of the bid has already expired.
          8. Terrorism – A US move for a UN ban on Jaish-e-Mohammed Chief and Pathankot attack mastermind Masood Azhar has once again been blocked by China. The US proposal was supported by Germany and France.
          9. Society and culture – Even when all political parties in UP are trying to woo Muslim voters ahead of the assembly polls, a Muslim resident of Nawabgnj in UP has asked the question as to why people think that the only aim of the Muslims is to defeat the BJP, when we also want jobs, better law and order, better earning opportunities and better schooling for our children.
          10. World economy – Amidst the backdrop of stricter H-1B visa restrictions, Japan has said that it would soon introduce a new Green Card programme to attract foreign talent. The programme would expedite granting permanent residency to highly skilled professionals.

        • 1. संविधान और कानून – भारतीय न्यायपालिका के इतिहास में पहली बार सर्वोच्च न्यायालय ने कोलकाता उच्च न्यायालय के विद्यमान न्यायाधीश को न्यायाधीशों पर भ्रष्टाचार के आरोप लगाने के लिए कारण बताओ नोटिस जारी किया है
          2. विमुद्रीकरण – पश्चिम बंगाल की मुख्यमंत्री ममता बैनर्जी ने एक बार फिर से केंद्र सरकार के विमुद्रीकरण के कदम पर उनकी पार्टी के विरोध की प्रतिपुष्टि की है, साथ ही उन्होंने सरकार से पूछा है कि वह कब तक गरीब लोगों को कष्ट देती रहेगी
          3. भारतीय राजनीति – राष्ट्रपति के अभिभाषण पर धन्यवाद प्रस्ताव पर बोलते हुए प्रधानमंत्री मोदी ने विमुद्रीकरण के मुद्दे पर संसद के शीतकालीन अधिवेशन की कार्यवाही को पूरी तरह से बाधित करने के लिए विपक्ष की कड़ी आलोचना की है। साथ ही उन्होंने एक बार फिर से यह दोहराया कि विमुद्रीकरण का कदम जल्दबाजी में नहीं लिया गया था और सरकार ने इसकी पूरी तैयारी की थी
          4. विश्व राजनीति – राष्ट्रपति ट्रम्प के सात मुस्लिम देशों के अमेरिका में प्रवेश को प्रतिबंधित करने के आदेश पर वहां के एक संघीय अपीलीय न्यायाधीश ने कड़ी आपत्ति ली है, और यह भी पूछा है कि क्या यह प्रतिबंध लोगों को उनके धर्म के आधार पर गलत तरीके से निशाना बनाता है
          5. भारतीय राजनीति – डीएमके के कार्यकारी अध्यक्ष एम के स्टालिन ने राज्य के राज्यपाल से आग्रह किया है कि वे राज्य में स्थाई सरकार के गठन के लिए उव्चित कदम उठाएं। इसी बीच राज्य के भूतपूर्व मुख्यमंत्री ओ पन्नीरसेल्वम ने कहा है कि उन्हें अपने पद से त्यागपत्र देने के लिए दबाव बनाया गया था
          6. संविधान और क़ानून – तमिलनाडु की अन्ना द्रमुक पार्टी और शशिकला को एक और झटका देते हुए निर्वाचन आयोग ने कहा है कि पार्टी ने अपने महासचिव के निर्वाचन में नियमों का पालन नहीं किया है
          7. रक्षा और सेना – अमेरिका से 16 बहु-भूमिका हेलीकाप्टर की खरीद का नौसेना का सौदा लगभग मृतवत हो गया है क्योंकि यह कीमतों के मुद्दे पर पिछले दो वर्षों से अटका हुआ है और अब अनुबंध की समय-सीमा भी समाप्त हो चुकी है
          8. आतंकवाद – जैश-ए-मोहम्मद प्रमुख और पठानकोट हमले के योजनाकार मसूद अजहर पर संयुक्त राष्ट्र प्रतिबंध लगाने के लिए अमेरिका द्वारा प्रस्तुत एक प्रस्ताव पर चीन ने एक बार फिर से रोक लगा दी है। अमेरिकी प्रस्ताव को जर्मनी और फ्रांस का समर्थन प्राप्त था
          9. समाज और संस्कृति – एक ओर जहाँ उत्तरप्रदेश चुनावों में विभिन्न राजनीतिक दल मुस्लिम मतदाताओं को रिझाने का प्रयास कर रहे हैं वहीँ नवाबगंज के एक मुस्लिम व्यक्ति ने स्वावल पूछा है कि लोगों को यह क्यों लगता है कि मुसलमानों का लक्ष्य भाजपा को हराना मात्र है। जबकि मुस्लिमों को भी नौकरियां चाहियें, उन्हें भी बेहतर कानून व्यवस्था की दरकार है, उन्हें भी अच्छे अर्जन के अवसर चाहियें और उनके बच्चों को भी अच्छी शिक्षा चाहिए
          10. विश्व अर्थव्यवस्था – अमेरिका द्वारा एच -1 बी वीजा पर अधिक कड़े प्रतिबंध लगाने के प्रस्ताव के बीच जापान ने कहा है कि वह विदेशी प्रतिभाओं को आकर्षित करने के लिए शीघ्र ही एक ग्रीन कार्ड कार्यक्रम शुरू करेगा। इस कार्यक्रम के अंतर्गत उच्च कौशल वाले व्यक्तियों को अधिक शीघ्र गति से स्थाई निवास प्रदान करने का प्रावधान किया जाएगा

        • 1. The South China Sea is situated off the shore of Southern China’s Hainan and is surrounded by The Philippines, Taiwan, Brunei, and Malaysia.
          2. All the above countries claim various levels of sovereignty over the region. The resulting situation in recent years has become extremely tense.
          3. The United Nations Convention on Laws of the Sea (UNCLOS) allows a 200 mile line from the coast as the sovereign territory of a nation. It has been often used to settle conflicting claims on such maritime sovereignty.
          4. China stakes its claim on the largest area of the sea (about 95%) marked by the Nine Dash Line, something that the Chinese state invented.
          5. The US interest in the region was on account of it being the pivot to South East Asia under the TPP (Trans-Pacific Partnership) that allows American goods a better access to markets. Now with the TPP gone, the Trump administration has made “keeping the shipping lines open for all” the key argument.
          6. The dispute over Spartly Islands is between PRC, Taiwan, and Vietnam, with Malaysia, Brunei and Philippines also claiming parts of this archipelago. Its 3.5 million square kilometers of bedrock contain huge oil and natural gas deposits, which are estimated differently by different countries.
          7. The region is of great strategic importance as a major supply route that carry almost 80% of China’s crude imports.  That accounts for Chinese aggression on the matter.
          8. Although UNCLOS has been signed and ratified by almost all coastal countries in the South China Sea, its interpretation is disputed. The recent adverse ruling by the UNCLOS was also rejected by China.
          9. Since 2014, the focus has shifted to China’s large-scale construction and installation of military-capable infrastructure at seven of its occupied islands. China has recently installed large weapon batteries on the artificially created islands.
          10. Overall, the situation remains unpredictable, and is considered a serious global flashpoint by analysts.
        • 1. दक्षिण चीन सागर दक्षिण चीन के हैनान तट के अपतटीय क्षेत्र में स्थित है और यह फिलीपींस, ताइवान, ब्रुनेई और मलेशिया जैसे देशों से घिरा हुआ है।
          2. उपरोक्त सभी देश इस क्षेत्र पर भिन्न-भिन्न स्तरों की संप्रभुता का दावा करते हैं। इसके परिणामस्वरूप निर्मित हुई स्थिति काफी तनावपूर्ण बन गई है।
          3. संयुक्त राष्ट्र समुद्री कानून पर सम्मेलन (यूएनसीएलओएस - UNCLOS) किसी देश के संप्रभुता प्रदेश के रूप में तट से 200 मील की रेखा की अनुमति देता है। इसका उपयोग अक्सर इस प्रकार की सामुद्रिक संप्रभुता के परस्पर विरोधी दावों के समाधान के लिए किया जाता है।
          4. चीन इस सागर के अधिकांश हिस्से (लगभग 95 प्रतिशत) पर अपना दावा करता है जो नाइन डैश रेखा (Nine Dash Line) द्वारा चिन्हित है, जो एक ऐसी रखा है जिसका आविष्कार चीन द्वारा ही किया गया था।

          6. स्प्रैटली द्वीप पर चीनी जनवादी गणराज्य (पीआरसी), ताइवान और मलेशिया के बीच विवाद है जिसमें मलेशिया, ब्रुनेई और फिलीपींस भी इस द्वीपसमूह के कुछ हिस्सों पर दावा करते हैं। इसके 35 लाख वर्ग किलोमीटर के समुद्री तल में तेल और प्राकृतिक गैस के विशाल भंडार मौजूद हैं जिनके अनुमान भिन्न-भिन्न देशों द्वारा भिन्न-भिन्न किये जाते हैं। इस मुद्दे पर चीन की आक्रामकता का यही कारण है।
          7. एक प्रमुख आपूर्ति मार्ग के रूप में सामरिक दृष्टि से यह क्षेत्र काफी महत्वपूर्ण है क्योंकि चीन के कुल तेल आयात का 80 प्रतिशत हिस्सा यहाँ से होकर ही गुजरता है।
          8. हालांकि संयुक्त राष्ट्र समुद्री कानून पर सम्मेलन (यूएनसीएलओएस) पर दक्षिण चीन सागर क्षेत्र के लगभग सभी तटीय देशों ने हस्ताक्षर किये हैं और इसकी पुष्टि की है फिर भी इसकी व्याख्या विवादित है। यूएनसीएलओएस द्वारा हाल ही में दिए गए चीन विरोधी निर्णय को चीन ने अस्वीकार कर दिया है।
          9. वर्ष 2014 से इसका केंद्र चीन द्वारा अपने कब्जे वाले सात द्वीपों पर किये गए निर्माण और सैन्य क्षमता वाली अधिष्ठापन अधोसंरचना पर केंद्रित हो गया है। हाल ही में चीन ने कृत्रिम रूप से निर्मित द्वीप पर विशाल हथियारों का प्रतिष्ठापन किया है।
          10. समग्र रूप से देखा जाये तो स्थिति अप्रत्याशित और अनिश्चित बनी हुई है और विश्लेषक इसे एक गंभीर वैश्विक तनाव बिंदु मानते हैं          ।
